Self-Worth

How do you define self-worth?

 

Is it through your possessions? Is it by the feats you have accomplished? Is it the number of text messages and "likes" you get on a daily basis? Is it through comparing yourself to another person and then judging them to see who is better based on your acquired ideology of good and bad?

 

For many years my self-worth was quantified through the comparisons of my success with the success of others.

 

Consider the following scenario, it may sound familiar...

After months of training, it is finally the day of the big race! You start to think about all of the work you put in over the last few months. The gun goes off and everyone goes flying. You cross the line and results are not what you hoped for.. You are crushed...defeated.

 

I've been in that situation many times and each time I asked, "Why am I even doing this?" I used to walk around for days after the race feeling like a phony; like I didn't belong in a competition. Negative thinking would control my mind. "This whole time I was putting on this persona that I can accomplish my goal for this race and now the world knows I can't", I used to tell myself. This thought process lead to inconsistent training, poor race results, and ultimately took me away from the sport. Somewhere along the line, I attached my self-worth to my training and race results and lost touch with what truly makes me worthy.

 

The dictionary defines self-worth as, "the sense of one's own value or worth as a person." It is important to remember that self-worth is about who you are, not what you do. Running may be what you do. Regardless of the results and regardless of the outcome of training, if you put forth your best effort a champion is who you are.

 

Quantifying your self-worth based on results will only lead to a path of suffering. Results can vary based on things that are out of your control, but what is in your control is your effort. How much as you willing to put out in order to reach your goals? How many times are you willing to fall down, get up, and do it again? You can always work harder, study smarter, or ask for help. The tools to use and avenues to take to achieve your goals are endless.
